Affordable Housing Project

  • 2001
  • Fenian Street, Dublin 2, Ireland
  • Client: Dublin City Council

This competition proposal for an infill building to complete an empty corner between two 1950’s social housing blocks, provides 14 affordable apartments for Dublin City Council. The compact apartment sizes are relieved by a combined balcony/wintergarden corner detail achieved by retractable folding glazed screens. The apartments can thereby enjoy either; a distinct winter garden room; a balcony or a weather-protected extension of the living room. Externally these modifications will read as seasonal changes to the elevations. The apartments are further planned with a fixed service core of bathroom, kitchen and storage to the rear with a flexible arrangement of bedroom and living spaces to the front. A ground floor café completes the project.
