Millennium Clock Tower

  • 1999—2000
  • Stranorlar, Donegal, Ireland
  • Client: Donegal County Council

This simple structure is a tower and a beacon. Situated across from St Mary’s Church and facing the bridge linking Stranorlar to Ballybofey, it creates a new pedestrian entrance to the bus station, which stands on the location of the former train station. The lower section of the tower is clad in limestone, while the upper section has a skin of woven stainless steel mesh. Depending on the light, the upper section alternates between an impression of solidity (an extension of the stone base) and a diffuse volume. At night the searchlight within the structure further decomposes its presence. A slit in the side allows views of the clock mechanism and bell, whilst the bus-yard entrance is balanced by an ‘oversized’ bench on the other side of the tower.
