University of Bonn

The University of Bonn, officially the Rhenish Friedrich Wilhelm University of Bonn, was founded in its present form as the Rhein-Universität in 1818 by Frederick Wilhem III. The University offers many undergraduate and graduate programs in a range of subjects and has 544 professors spread across a dispersed campus.

The main university building is the Kurfürstliches Schloss, the former residential palace of the prince-elector of Cologne. This was built by Enrico Zuccalli for the prince-elector of Cologne, Joseph Clemens of Bavaria from 1697 to 1705. Today it houses the faculty of humanities and theology and the university administration. The Hofgarten, a large park in front of the main building is a popular place for students to meet, study and relax.

In 2025 HRA in collaboration with &Mica Architekten were invited to take part in an invited competition to re-organise & restructure the complete building to accommodate the changing academic needs of the university.

The HRA and &MICA entry was placed third in the competition.
